5 tips to reduce your moving costs

Moving soon?  Here are a few tips that will save you hundreds of dollars:
affordable moving

    1. Get rid of the unnecessary: (do you really need it?)
As most moving companies in Montreal charge hourly, reducing the move’s duration should be your first concern. The more stuff you have, the longer iyour moving lasts.  Chances are you have a lot of pieces of furniture, clothes, shoes and …(stuff) that you won’t need anymore. If they are still in a usable shape, consider selling them for a low price or donating them as charity.
If you decide to trash some of your belongings, please do it in an eco responsible way.

   2. Pack ‘em yourself:
While most moving companies offer packing services, you save big if you buy the boxes and filling materials at a specialized moving store  and do them yourself. Think about it, an experienced mover can make 5 to 9 boxes per hour. If the company is charging you $180/h + $5 for the box itself, you are paying between $20 and $32 for each box.
This will also make you consider what’s worth moving and what’s not (tip #1), reduce the number of boxes by 10 and you’ve already saved $200+.
Please recycle the cartons once settled and relieved.

   3. Do not chose the lowest rate:
Avoid companies that label them selves as ‘CHEAP’ or ‘lowest price’, chances are their underpaid personnel doesn’t really care about your property and furniture. Also, due to high employee turnover, unexperienced movers will make costly mistakes and work at a slower pace.
If the hourly rate is lower but the job lasts longer, are your really saving?
Are they even registered and insured?
Do they perform background checks on their staff?
Finally, if they are the lowest price, guess who they moved before you. Do you really want to get bedbugs or cockroaches in your new home?
An old mover once told us ‘As a general truth in life, if you pay peanuts, you only attract monkeys’!

   4. Hidden fees:
Ask your moving company for a detailed service contract and what they charge as EXTRAS. We’ve heard so many horror stories like ‘$50 for every level if we have to take the stairs’ ‘$25 extra for every door we take off’, ‘$200 for the oversized fridge’…Such extras are usually revealed to the client at the time of billing, some will even use their most intimidating mover to bill and collect...
This will help you chose the right company and have a relatively precise idea on the amount you will be paying.
At Excellence DLT, we take a lot of pride matching the free estimate/quote we sent you at the time of your booking. The final amount might vary but we are rarely off by more than 10%.

   5. Avoid moving season peak:
As any other industry, offer and demand impact prices. In Montreal, Qc, Canada, if you are planning to move between June 24th on July 1st expect to pay at least 50% more. Try to find a way to avoid that peak, sometimes it's just a matter of asking and synchronising with the people moving in or out.

We hope these tips help you make wise decisions and make your next move a lovely experience.

What do best movers do?

As a mover, I always compare my self to other fellow movers as a mechanism of self improvement. Clearly to become the best, you must keep a humble state of mind and remain eager to learn, despite all the years of experience, there is always room for improvement…. Here is my top 5 must have qualities for a mover/ moving company:
  1. A helping approach: For the client, moving times are stressful and tiresome, take that burden off their mind with a genuine smile. Show them you are in charge and things will run smooth.
  2. Keep your truck clean and equipment in good condition. This tells a lot about your working ethics and the clientele you serve…
  3. Arrive on time: This can be hard for your second or even third move of the day, if things take longer than planned consider giving next clients a call or ask dispatch to do it on your behalf.
  4. Use all necessary protections: There is nothing worse than denting a nice stainless refrigerator! Well, may be scratching wooden floors or... both!!! Use blankets and carpets man!! Remember they hired you because you’re the PRO …
  5. Drive safe: always remember that things are not in their original packaging, vibration and road imperfections ( especially in Montreal, Qc )  can cause disasters (cracs, scratches, dents, breakages, leaks...)
